Pronote is the school life software used by the vast majority of middle and high schools in France. For students, the dedicated space allows them to check schedules, grades, homework, and absences. Accessing this space often poses difficulties, not because of the tool itself, but because the access path varies from one institution to another.
Identify the right portal before attempting to connect to Pronote
The first source of blockage is not technical. Feedback from the field, relayed by several local authorities, shows that students confuse ENT, Pronote, and EduConnect. Some departments have had to publish specific communications to clear up this persistent confusion between the different platforms.
Pronote can be accessed in two ways depending on the institution’s choices. Either through a direct URL (such as e972000a.index-education.net/pronote/eleve.html), or by first going through the ENT (digital work environment) of the middle or high school, which then redirects to Pronote.
If your institution uses an ENT, attempting to access Pronote via a direct URL found on a search engine will not work. The ENT username and password are then the only valid keys. The procedure for connecting to the Pronote student space therefore entirely depends on the information provided by your institution’s administration at the beginning of the year.
Before any attempt, check the document given at the start of the school year or the website of your middle/high school. That’s where the exact URL is listed, not on Google.
Pronote student connection on browser: username, password, and blockage cases
Once the right portal is identified, the login page for the student space asks for a username and password. These two elements are generated and distributed by the institution, not by Index Éducation (the publisher of Pronote). They may differ from the student’s last name.
During the first connection, a password change is usually required. It is at this stage that many students lose their access: the new password is forgotten or incorrectly saved in the browser.
Lost password or forgotten username
The recovery procedure goes through the institution. Pronote does not offer a self-reset option like a social network. The student must contact the school administration or the secretary’s office to obtain a new username or a temporary password.
Some institutions have activated recovery via email address, but this is not systematic. If no address has been provided in the account, only administrative staff can reset access.
Pronote does not work in the evening: the time restriction
A lesser-known scenario generates frustration. Several institutions apply a nighttime block on student access, typically between 8 PM and 7 AM. The goal is to limit late-night consultation of grades and assignments.
The student then sees an error message or an inaccessible page and concludes that there is a malfunction. This is not a technical failure but a voluntary restriction decided by the administration. Checking access hours with the middle or high school avoids unnecessary attempts.
Pronote mobile application: QR code and dual account
The Pronote mobile application, available on Android and iOS, includes the most frequently consulted features: schedule, latest grades, absences, homework. It uses the same credentials as the web version.
Connection via QR code from a computer
To link the application to an account, Pronote offers a method using a QR code. The student first logs in on a computer via the browser, then generates a QR code from the account settings. This code is then scanned with the mobile application to activate the link.
This method has a concrete advantage: it avoids manually entering the institution’s URL and credentials on a small screen. It also reduces typing errors, a frequent source of connection failures on mobile.

Setting up a second account on the same phone
A student with a separated parent, or changing schools during the year, may need two Pronote accounts on one device. The mobile application allows adding multiple accounts and switching between them. Each account requires its own QR code or its own entry of credentials.
Personal data and privacy of the Pronote student space
Index Éducation, the publisher of Pronote, has ISO 9001 certification and claims to have SecNumCloud qualified hosting. School data is hosted in France. Only functional cookies are used on the login spaces, according to the privacy policy displayed on the access pages.
For the student, this means that grades, comments, and personal information are only visible to authorized individuals (teachers, administration, parents with their own space). The password should never be shared with a classmate, even to “check grades”: access also allows viewing sensitive information such as sanctions or exchanges with teachers.
One last point to keep in mind: connecting via a public Wi-Fi network (shopping center, train station) exposes credentials more. Favoring mobile connection in 4G or a home network remains a simple and effective precaution to protect your Pronote account.
