Technical factors that affect mowing costs
The area alone is not enough to establish a realistic quote. Several technical parameters modify the actual working time, and thus the final price.
- Slope and terrain relief: mowing across a slope requires slower passes, sometimes specific equipment (self-propelled mower or brush cutter), and increases the gardener’s fatigue. The additional cost can be significant compared to an equivalent flat terrain.
- Presence of obstacles (trees, flower beds, walls, children’s play equipment): each obstacle requires maneuvers, trimming with a string trimmer, and reduces the mower’s efficiency. A highly compartmentalized garden is billed more than an open plot of the same size.

Annual mowing contract: profitability and points of vigilance
An annual contract reduces the unit cost of each visit, because the gardener secures a recurring volume of work. The observed ranges for complete maintenance over the season range from a few hundred to over a thousand euros per year, depending on the area and frequency.
The number of visits included in the contract determines profitability. A healthy lawn requires mowing every one to two weeks between April and October. A contract that provides for fewer visits than necessary exposes you to one-off interventions billed at full price, which negates the savings.
What the contract must specify
The frequency of visits, the services included (collection, edging finishes, disposal), the cancellation conditions in case of prolonged drought (when the lawn stops growing), and the rates for out-of-contract interventions. A contract that is vague about additional services systematically generates extra costs.
Tax credit and reduced VAT: the real cost after tax advantage
Lawn mowing performed by a provider declared as “personal services” entitles you to a 50% tax credit on the billed amounts. This mechanism effectively halves the net cost for the individual, up to an annual ceiling of 5,000 euros. Individuals also benefit from a 10% VAT on this type of service.
This tax credit radically changes the calculation. An annual contract priced at 900 euros effectively costs 450 euros net after tax deduction. This is a parameter that many quotes do not highlight, even though it alters the comparison with alternatives (robot mowers, mowing by an undeclared individual).
To benefit from this, the provider must be accredited or go through a designated organization. Check this status before signing: a regular self-employed gardener without accreditation does not grant you access to this advantage.
Pricing trends and recent grids
The pricing grids published in recent months show an upward trend. Hourly rates are now closer to 35 to 45 euros per hour for mowing and regular maintenance, whereas many general articles remain on older estimates around 25 to 35 euros. This increase reflects the rising cost of labor, social charges, and fuel for thermal equipment.

Requesting several detailed quotes remains the only reliable way to obtain a rate suited to your terrain. Specify the exact area, slope, number of obstacles, and desired frequency so that the proposals are comparable. A quote that does not mention additional services deserves a request for clarification before commitment.
